Despite furious arm-twisting by leading Republican House members, the full House rejected an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which would have allowed illegal aliens a fast track to citizenship by joining the military.
The vote was 221-202 to remove the measure from Congress’ annual defense policy bill. Some 20 Republicans voted “no” but couldn’t overcome conservatives who threatened to oppose the overall bill if they didn’t get their way.
“This Congress should support and represent Americans by voting to stop military service opportunities from being taken from struggling American families in order to give them to illegal aliens,” GOP Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama, who led the fight, argued on the House floor ahead of the vote.
The vote was close even after it was revealed the net effect of the illegal alien amendment and the funding figures for the Defense Department meant combat veterans would be sacrificed to make room for illegal aliens.
Some Republicans argued this was not the place for a debate on immigration while others claimed the illegal alien “amnesty amendment” was simply a mistake which slipped through late at night.
For now, illegals will not be taking the place of combat veterans in the Army. However, the illegal alien amendment can come up again at a later time in the budget process.

The first step toward the decline of the Roman Army came when the Romans started to hire mercenaries rather than Roman citizens to man the legions. History shows that that didn’t work out very well. Neither would illegal aliens in the ranks of America’s Armed Forces.

John, you know your history! I have been thinking exactly the same thing since I heard about this latest insanity coming out of our government. In the end the Barbarians learned everything they could about the way the Roman army worked and turned on them and the empire fell apart. Not to mention the fact that Multiculturalism didn’t work then and it’s not working now.

Thanks! Not many people get the parallel. Most people seem to believe that ancient history has no modern application. Maybe they can’t get past names like Mithridates and Vercingetorix, but I find Ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern History to be fascinating, and that most people couldn’t be more wrong.
Though the dilution/replacement of the Roman Army was the first step, it didn’t of itself bring the Empire to its knees. Inflation would have done that all by itself. Roman citizens didn’t pay taxes. Instead, the Empire drained conquered countries and provinces down to the last copper. Similarly, the top 1% in the U.S. pay most of the taxes. Because of that arrangement, I believe that eventually, what happened to Rome will happen here. The Empire ran out of money because, like any government, it had none to call its own, and there was nowhere left to loot more when it was gone. Rome suffered 5,000% inflation over a 200 year period. It not only could no longer afford to pay the mercenary armies, which, as you say, turned on Rome, but the greatest welfare state in History couldn’t feed its own citizens. “Bread and circuses” fell alongside the Empire.
Don’t get me started on the positively eerie historical parallels with President Obozo and the Mad Mullahs of Iran.
Thanks for the articulate history lesson. I too am fascinated by ancient history. It amazes me at what they managed to build without power tools; and what still stands today. Their mathematical achievements boggle the mind, done without the aid of computers.
