The next Kathryn is counting on us to get this right’Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA) News Release
Washington, Jul 15 – Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) yesterday spoke in favor of the Yoder Amendment to the Fiscal Year 2016 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill, which would prohibit the use of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) preparedness grants for cities that claim to be so-called sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants and refuse to cooperate with federal immigration law.
The Yoder Amendment was adopted by the committee and added to the Fiscal Year 2016 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill, which was subsequently passed by the Appropriations Committee.
The issue of sanctuary cities gained prominence after Kathryn Steinle was tragically slain while walking with her father on a pier in San Francisco. The alleged killer is an illegal immigrant and seven-time convicted felon who was deported to Mexico five times. As the alleged killer told news outlets, he went toSan Francisco because it is a sanctuary city and would not deport him.
Rep. Graves: “Thank you, Mr. Chairman. And good healthy debate here https://youtu.be/OaFPPgaH2OQ today. A lot of discussion about sanctuary.
And when I think about sanctuary, I think about: that is the purpose of America is to be a sanctuary for law abiding citizens.
This is a place of refuge in which those who go about their days and their lives, each and every day, should have the opportunity and knowledge that they are protected; they’re in a safe zone.
And that this is their sanctuary, not one for illegals. Not a sanctuary for those who are breaking the law. But that is, in fact, what is happening.
But more so, as a father of two daughters – I think about the men in this room here: many of you have daughters I’m sure – imagine the last three words that you ever heard your daughter speak was “help me, dad…help me, dad.”
Imagine those words.
That plea was shared by Kathryn to her dad. Why? Because government let her down.
The question for you today is, will you let her down?
The next Kathryn is counting on us to get this right. Let’s support the Yoder Amendment.”
