Patrol: Illegal alien caused crash that injured girl

July 29– LIMA — An immigrant, who officials said may have entered the country illegally and who they said ran a stop sign causing a crash Sunday that injured four people, remained in jail Tuesday.

Charges were pending against Alexandro Garcia and he remained in jail in Allen County. It’s also possible U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcementagents may take him, officials said.

Meanwhile, a 6-year-old girl who was a passenger inside the car Garcia was driving continued to recover from serious injuries, said Lt. David Brown, the post commander of the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 2:55 p.m. Sunday on state Route 309 at Defiance Trail. Garcia was driving north on Defiance Trail when he ran a stop sign and struck a vehicle traveling southeast driven by Charles Gallagher, 51, Brown said. Gallagher’s vehicle landed on its side.

Gallagher and two other passengers in Garcia’s vehicle, an 8-year-old boy and Nicole Dowell, 27, of Lima, were taken to the hospital where they were treated and later released, Brown said.

Garcia, 24, ran from officers after the crash but was captured a short time later. He told a trooper he ran because he was living in the country illegally, Brown said.

The crash closed state Route 309 for about 30 minutes. The crash remained under investigation Tuesday, Brown said.
