Aug. 19–Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson slipped into Tucson this afternoon to have lunch with more than a dozen supporters.
The former neurosurgeon ate at the Silver Saddle Steakhouse on the south side’s East Benson Highway, a day after speaking to thousands of people at thePhoenix Convention Center.
He drew national attention as well, after commenting later in the day that he supports the use of military drone strikes to help secure the border.
“You look at some of these caves and things out there one drone strike, boom, and they’re gone,” Carson told reporters near the border Wednesday, according to CNN, citing affiliate KPHO.
The retired neurosurgeon discussed illegal immigration following a helicopter tour of the Arizona- Mexico border, as well as smuggling and scout locations.
“I’m suggesting we do what we need to do to secure the border — whatever that is,” he’s quoted as saying.
Recent polls have Carson increasing in popularity in the GOP race, and as high as second place in a recent CNN poll behind businessman Donald Trump.
In January, comedian/actor/director/screenwriter Adam Sandler stopped in to the Silver Saddle to have dinner with his sister.
